Two Bathroom Remodels: Hartsdale and Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
Two small bathrooms, two towns, two opposite approaches. Both worked. Here's what each one actually took.
The problem in this one was floor space. Not much of it, and a standard toilet was eating what there was.
Oversized white tile, set vertically. Vertical runs pull the eye upward and make a low, tight room read taller, which horizontal tile will not do for you. Black fixtures against the white, so the room has contrast instead of going flat and clinical.
We hung a top-roller sliding shower door on a barn-style track. A hinged door needs swing clearance in front of it, and in a bathroom this size that clearance is most of the usable floor. A slider gives it back.
Then a space-saving compact toilet, which buys back a few more inches of walking room. Small change, and it’s the one people notice when they step in.

Project 2: Compact Bathroom Remodel in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
Same size problem, opposite answer. This homeowner wanted warm, not bright.
Large-format brown tile, which cuts the number of grout lines. Fewer visual breaks is what actually makes a tight room feel bigger, more than color does. Storage went into the wall rather than onto the floor, with inset shelving in the shower for bottles that would otherwise sit on the tub edge. Towel bars and fixtures placed to keep the walking path clear.
Hastings-on-Hudson is an incorporated village with its own building department, so this one needed permits pulled through the Village. The homeowner mentioned it in her review:

Worth knowing if you’re in either. Hastings-on-Hudson is an incorporated village and permits through the Village. Hartsdale is unincorporated Greenburgh, so that job went through the Town. Different fee schedules, different inspection queues. We confirm which one you’re in before anything gets drawn.
