One man built most of it. Walter Law founded the village and it incorporated in 1902. He put a hotel on the highest point of his estate that became America’s foremost luxury resort, hosting celebrities for decades, until it burned down in 2003. Down by the river, the Woodlea mansion at Sleepy Hollow Country Club was built in the early 1890s for Commodore Vanderbilt’s granddaughter and designed by Stanford White, the architect behind Madison Square Garden.
