The most common species under Westchester carpets:
In terms of condition: floors that have been protected under carpet for decades are often in better shape than floors that have been exposed. They haven’t had foot traffic, pet claws, or furniture dragging across them. The most common issues we find are: a few water stains from old leaks, tack strip holes around the perimeter (easily repaired and invisible after refinishing), and some gapping from seasonal expansion and contraction — all normal and all fixable.

We’ll tell you if the floors aren’t worth revealing — we’d rather be honest upfront than have an unhappy client. Situations where we’d advise against it:
Pulling carpet and refinishing floors is almost always best done alongside other work — it’s one of those projects where the timing and sequencing relative to other trades matters. You want the floors done after any dusty or messy work (demo, drywall, painting prep) and before final paint coats, new baseboards, and furniture return.
